Originally created as an art object in 2019, this useless tool flops around when you try to use it, and anyone who uses it can’t help but laugh. Earlier iterations made appearances on my coffee table and at my dinner parties, where they were instant conversation starters. It quickly became clear that this hammer sparks joy, and we always need a little more of that. Chaos! Chaos! The band’s lead, Lora-Faye Åshuvud, wrote this album as a chaotic exploration of queerness and gender. The album’s design is very photo-heavy and picks up motifs in the lyrics to create surrealistic imagery and embrace organized chaos — sometimes beautiful and grotesque. The visuals work hard to embody the band’s music and tone. The image I chose was Saint Frances of Rome Announcing the End of the Plague in Rome by Nicolas Poussin. I have seen this painting twice in my life. The first time I was three years old and it was hanging at the top of a staircase in my grandmothers house. The second time I saw it, I was twenty-one and it was hanging in a gallery at the Louvre. The transition of this artwork involved theft, fights, deaths, and forgeries. I tried to encrypt this complicated narrative through geometric abstraction (by taking certain elements of this story and fragmenting like memory) and then rendering them as geometric forms. <img The poster is interactive and takes cues form instructional art. As it sits in a pile on the floor, the top side of the poster reads, “PICK ME UP OFF OF THE FLOOR” in blue letters while on its verso it reads, “PIN ME UP AGAINST THE WALL, BABY” in red. Carpet padding material is submissive in nature because it is hidden from view and walked on.
